What are the Different Sections and Periods on the ACT Test?

  • The ACT consists of four sections – English, Math, Reading and Science – and an optional fifth section – Essay Writing.
  • It consists of 215 questions (excluding an optional essay), which students have to solve in 2 hours and 55 minutes.
  • The additional optional section is scheduled for 40 minutes and consists of an essay.
  • The English section consists of 75 questions which the candidates have to answer in 45 minutes.

  • 35 minutes are given to solve 40 questions in both Science and Reading sections.
  • Two breaks of 10 and 5 minutes respectively are provided after the Mathematics and Science section.

In just 30 years, the popularity of the ACT has surpassed that of the SAT. Now almost every college considers it. In 2005, an optional writing section was added, a booster for students to excel further in English. However, scores from this section are not included in the main ACT score.

Several questions were raised after the overhauling of the SAT in 2016. Universities and colleges wanted a simplified version of admitting students, which included many other study materials and student qualifications. Anyone can easily understand ACT scores.
